4 New CDMP in Toronto!

Submitted by Deborah Henderson

On November 21 2009 IRMAC (Information Resource Association of Canada) sponsored a CDMP exam session in Toronto. Examinees met at a local library to write their selected exams towards the CDMP. There were eight in attendance and Deborah Henderson (CDMP (M) 2004) was the proctor. Although the weather was cloudy and cool, the examinees where raring to go. Four of the candidates would gain their CDMP if they where successful on this day. All passed! The other two candidates have other exams to write but they also where successful. Congratulations to all!

IRMAC intends to run another exam session with Deborah as proctor on February 21 2010 for those interested.

Another 7 earn CDMP in Seattle!

The October 22-23rd CDMP Exam Prep Bootcamp was a big success. Seven more joined the ranks of Certified Data Management Professionals after two grueling days of prep questions, Noah's Bagels, breathtaking views of puget sound, and, oh yeah, exams. Lots of exams.

Congratulations to Craig Austin, Deb Weller, Dorian Jung, James Werner, Ken Harris, Liz Parks and Lorin Yeaton for earning their CDMP credentials!

With more than 18 now certified in the Seattle DAMA chapter, it should be noted that Seattle is still in the lead in the challenge with Portland for CDMP holders. However, since Dorian drove all the way from Portland to take the class, the group wondered whether Portland or Seattle should claim him in their counts. Hmm, looks like the Portland chapter may need to have another class soon to catch up. ;)

During the first day, the group worked through the topics and practice questions for the IS Core and Data Management exams. Although mentally exhausted, the group's spirits were high by the end of the day as people made it through the first set of exams. On Friday, we started the day bright and early with a lively discussion of Data Warehousing topics. We all learned a lot from the rich experience in the room as we worked through the exam outline and the practice questions, with some useful explanations and whiteboard drawings provided by various participants to illustrate concepts. After lunch, it was heads down, focused on exams through the end of the day.

Thanks to Isilon Systems and DAMA Puget Sound (DAMA-PS) for sponsoring this event. We couldn't have had a better location! The views were amazing and the hospitality was wonderful. Overall, it was another great workshop!

The Graying of Our Profession

I'd like to highlight a relevant blog post called "The Data Model of Dorian Gray."

The successful Data Management professional often has years of experience in business and I.T., in addition to specialized skills in data modeling and business analysis. The CDMP has helped to formalize these skills and DAMA is working to establish curriculum frameworks for colleges, but there is no standard path into this profession. Corey discusses what we can do as professionals to bring new blood in and raise awareness among young people.

Enterprise Data World 2009 - 8 New CDMPs!

Overall attendance was down a bit due to the economy, but it was barely noticeable from a participants perspective. EDW was full of energy and enthusiasm this year! The much anticipated DAMA-DMBOK was launched and is now available on Amazon.com. Homemade Jam was hopping on Monday and Tuesday nights. The "underground reporting" on Twitter provided minute by minute perspectives of attendees. The sessions were full of insights and information and it was great to catch up with old friends and meet new ones.

Here's what others said about EDW09: Francine Adams in the Examiner, "It was a meeting of the minds; the best minds in the world in data management at Enterprise Data World presented April 5-9, 2009 at the Tampa Convention Center in Tampa, Florida." Jim Harris commented on his OCDQ blog: "This year’s program was bigger than ever before, with more sessions, more case studies, and more can’t-miss content. "

On Sunday afternoon, Pat Cupoli gave a CDMP exam prep workshop to about 20 people, and several stayed to take exams after the workshop. During the conference, Pat, Francine Adams and I were busy proctoring exams. The Zachman Enterprise Architecture exam and the Business Process Management exams were offered as free beta exams and a total of 46 exams were given. In the exhibit hall, people were lined up at the DAMA-I booth for information about CDMP and the DAMA-DMBOK.

Eight people became Certified Data Management Professionals at the conference! We welcome them all to "club" CDMP! Each year, there seems to be more and more interest in certification. Whether it's the economy, or we're just starting to reach a "tipping" point of awareness -- there are more data professionals proudly displaying their CDMP credentials and increasing interest in certification from all over the world.

DAMA-DMBOK is heading to the presses!

The long-awaited Guide to the Data Management Body of Knowledge went to the publisher on January 22, 2009. The plan is to launch it at Enterprise Data World in Tampa, April 5-9. The guide will be published by Technic Publications (Steve Hoberman's company), and will be priced at $54.95 U.S. currency, according to Deborah Henderson, the V.P. of Education for DAMA International. She also suggests that it be purchased in conjunction with the DAMA Dictionary of Data Management, which is $44.95 and currently available at Amazon.com.

This is a landmark publication for the data management profession. Over 150 experts in the field contributed to authoring, reviewing and editing this comprehensive guide. It will be a valuable resource for those preparing for certification and will serve as a framework for future certification exams and curriculum. Look for it at Enterprise Data World in April, and it will be available for pre-sale at Amazon.com soon. Stay tuned to this blog! As soon as it's available on Amazon, you'll find a link right here.
